There was a time when people grew orchards or fruit trees in homesteads primarily for their own consumption. But things have massively changed as farmers are turning to fruit production for its commercial viability. Over the past two decades, fruits production and import fruit in the Bangladesh has seen a silent revolution due to the success of commercial farming.

Bangladesh has maintained an average annual rise in fruit output of 11.5 percent for the previous 18 years, placing it among the top 10 tropical fruit-producing nations in the world, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

A large population of over 170 million people has experienced persistent expansion despite the restricted supply of land, resulting in an average increase in per capita fruit intake from 55 grams in 2006 to 85 grams in 2018.

Local fruit production has seen a significant expansion in the commercial sector between 2013–14 and 2021–2022. The rise in the production of watermelons, bananas, papayas, guavas, and mangoes is particularly noteworthy during this time.  Mango production has reached a record level this year, according to Department of Agricultural Extension officials, marking the nation’s independence. According to the most recent FAO estimates, the nation currently ranks second in the world for annual jackfruit production, seventh for mango, and eighth for guava. Imported Fruits Market

Bangladesh, a densely populated country with a growing economy, has witnessed a significant increase in the demand for fruits in recent years. To meet this rising demand, the country has become increasingly reliant on fruit imports. All of the nation’s towns and villages now sell imported fruits. The fruit business has grown to the point where roadside vendors are now offering a wide range of exotic fruits for purchase. According to import figures, Bangladesh consumes 1.68 million kg of exotic fruit on average each day, with retail sales estimated to be worth Tk 270 million.

Apples are imported the most, followed by Malta (a variety of orange), oranges, pomegranate, grapes, pears and lime. In the last fiscal, 616,000 tons of fruit were imported. Among these, 77 per cent were apples and Malta. According to updates of the US Department of Agriculture, Bangladesh is the 3rd and 6th largest importers of apple and Malta respectively.
